Register for Introduction to Shotgun

This 2-hour introductory class is designed for anyone interested in learning more about shotguns, safe handling, and the role a shotgun may play in a home-defense situation.

No shotgun is needed to attend. This class is open to anyone, including those who are considering purchasing a shotgun but do not yet own one. If you are interested in getting a shotgun, this is an excellent opportunity to learn the basics, handle and try different shotgun options, and see whether a shotgun is a good fit for you.

Students will learn the fundamentals of safe shotgun handling, including how to safely load, unload, and verify the condition of the firearm. The class will also cover common shotgun ammunition types, including slugs, 00 buckshot, and #4 shot, with discussion and demonstration of their capabilities and limitations.

This course is intended to give students a practical foundation in how shotguns function, how different ammunition performs, and what responsible owners should understand before considering a shotgun for home defense.

Safe shotgun handling
Loading and unloading procedures
Understanding shotgun controls and operation
Common ammunition types: slugs, 00 buck, and #4 shot
Ammunition selection considerations

Equipment List for Introduction to Shotgun

  • Shotgun — optional
    Students may bring their own shotgun, but it is not required. If you do not own a shotgun, this class is still a great opportunity to learn and try different options.

  • If bringing your own shotgun, please bring 10 rounds of slugs, 10 rounds of 00 buckshot, and 20 rounds of #4 shot in the correct gauge for your firearm.

  • Eye and ear protection

  • Weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear
