Less Than Lethal Self Defense Options: Lesson 4 - Personal Alarms and Air Horns

One of the most overlooked tools in the self-defense toolbox is noise. Most criminals want an easy win, they don’t want to get caught, draw attention, or escalate the risk of getting identified. That’s where personal alarms and air horns can be a great option. These tools work not by incapacitating the attacker, but by disrupting their plan and alerting others to your situation.

A. Personal Alarms

Personal alarms are compact, easy-to-carry devices that emit a loud, high-pitched siren, often between 120 and 140 decibels, when activated. They’re designed to startle an attacker and get the attention of anyone nearby. Some models also include strobe lights for added visibility in low-light conditions.

  • Activation: Most personal alarms are activated by pulling a pin or pressing a button.

  • Portability: They can easily attach to a keychain, bag, or waistband for quick access.

  • Non-confrontational: These devices are ideal for individuals who may not be ready or physically able to fight back, including kids, seniors, and college students.

 Recommended Options:

A loud personal alarm can interrupt an attacker's mental plan and provide the critical seconds you need to escape or draw help.

B. Air Horns

Air horns aren’t just for boats or sports, they’re powerful, inexpensive self-defense and alerting tools. A handheld air horn can easily be kept in your home, car, or emergency bag for quick use.

  • Deterrence: The blast is shocking and unmistakable, often over 120dB. Perfect for scaring off people or aggressive animals.

  • Home Use: In quiet neighborhoods, an air horn can function like an improvised home alarm, startling an intruder and signaling your neighbors that something is wrong.

  • Law Enforcement Alert: The unusual sound is likely to prompt a neighbor to call 911, even before you’ve reached your phone.
