Setting Up Your Mobile Command Center - Lesson 1 - Vehicle Maintenance

Vehicle Maintenance Basics

Let's start with the basics of vehicle maintenance to ensure you do your best to avoid breakdowns. Here are key maintenance items to keep your vehicle in top condition:

Fuel Level: Never let your fuel tank drop below half. This ensures you have enough fuel in emergencies and reduces the risk of fuel pump damage and beat the crowds and lines waiting for fule

Fluids: Regularly check and top off all fluids, including engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Change the oil as recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Additionally, check the radiator coolant to ensure you have the correct antifreeze-to-water ratio for your climate.  Improper coolant levels or degraded fluid can lead to overheating. Inspect radiator hoses for leaks, cracks, or swelling, as a burst hose can leave you stranded.

Tire Pressure & Condition: Maintain correct tire pressure and check it regularly, especially in extreme temperature changes and altitude shifts, as these factors can cause fluctuations. In addition to monitoring pressure, ensure your tires have adequate tread depth, at least 2/32” for normal conditions, but 4/32” is recommended for wet or winter driving. Rotate your tires and check for proper alignment to promote even wear and extend their lifespan. Don’t forget to check the spare tire and ensure you have the proper tools to change a tire in an emergency.

Battery: Check the battery’s age and condition as the typical lifespan varies depending on climate and use. Replace it before it fails, and inspect the terminals for corrosion, keeping them clean and secure. If your battery is more than three years old, consider having it load-tested before extreme weather seasons. Always carry jumper cables or a portable jump starter to avoid being stranded due to a dead battery.

Lights and Signals: Ensure all exterior and interior lights, including headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and emergency flashers, are functioning properly. Replace any burnt-out bulbs immediately.

Belts and Hoses: Inspect belts and hoses for signs of wear and tear, replacing any that are cracked, frayed, or showing significant wear.

Brakes: Regularly check the condition of your brakes, including brake pads, rotors, and fluid levels. Replace brake pads before they are completely worn out to maintain stopping power and prevent costly rotor damage.

Windshield Wipers: Ensure your windshield wipers are in good condition and replace them if they are streaking or failing to clear the windshield properly. Also, keep the windshield washer reservoir full to maintain visibility in adverse conditions.

Air Filter: Check and replace the engine air filter as needed. A clean air filter improves fuel efficiency and engine performance.

Transmission and Drivetrain: Regularly check your transmission fluid level and condition, ensuring it is not burnt or discolored. For 4WD or AWD vehicles, inspect the differential and transfer case fluids to ensure proper lubrication and function.

Undercarriage and Suspension: Check your shocks and struts for signs of wear, as worn-out components can lead to poor handling and longer braking distances. Inspect steering components, including tie rods and ball joints, for excessive wear or looseness.

Exhaust System: Inspect your exhaust system for leaks.  A damaged or leaking exhaust pipe can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide buildup inside the vehicle. If catalytic converter theft is common in your area, consider installing a security shield.

Emergency Equipment Checks: Ensure your spare tire is properly inflated and that you have the necessary tools, including a jack and lug wrench. Carry a basic tool kit with pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, and duct tape for minor roadside repairs. Keep spare fuses and relays for critical vehicle systems like lights and the fuel pump, as these small components can prevent major breakdowns.
